What’s isan?
Derived from a Sanskrit word, “Ishan” (North East direction), Isan is a commonly used word to describe the beautiful northeastern plateau of Thailand. Our Menus.
Most of our menu items are designed to be shared and are delivered to the table when prepared as a sort of "Isan-style tapas" - a way for our customers to enjoy a wide range of aromatics, tastes and flavors. The highlight of the menu is Somtum, which is the papaya salad prepared with a variety of ingredients and styles.
our story
Known throughout Thailand for its delicious and authentic Papaya Salad, or ”Somtum”, Somtum Der Bangkok set foot in New York in 2013 with the idea that the American palate was ready for a more authentic and varied form of Thai food – one that reflected the specialized and often spicy tastes of the country’s Northeast “Isan” region. This idea was well-received and in 2016 Somtum Der was awarded a prestigious Michelin Star and has continued to be one of the Michelin guide’s Best Values every year since.
